Overview
Preventable accidental injuries are among the most common reasons for morbidity and mortality in young children. This session will explore the three leading causes of accidental childhood injuries in Orange County, poisoning due to ingestion, drowning, and unsafe sleep environment, and ways to reduce and/or prevent these tragedies.
Course approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 14988 for 2 contact hours. Credits received through the Orange County Department of Education.

Overview
- Learn the definition of, causes of, and prevention of drowning in young children.
- Review safe sleep guidelines and why they are Important in saving children’s lives.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of accidental poisoning and prevention strategies.

Van Nguyen Greco, MD, FAAP received her medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed her internship and residency in Pediatrics at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. She trained in child abuse at LSU/Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. She is board-certified in General Pediatrics and Child Abuse Pediatrics. She has been evaluating children and providing consultations for concerns of abuse and neglect in Orange County for almost 15 years. As associate clinical professor of pediatrics with University of CA Irvine Department of Pediatrics, she serves as a part-time child abuse pediatrician at the Child Abuse Services Team (CAST), UCI Medical Center, and occasionally Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). She regularly provides education on child maltreatment to the community, including medical and non-medical audiences.
Dr. Murray, MD FAAP attended both medical school and pediatric residency at the University of California, Irvine. After her residency, she worked in general and in-patient pediatrics for two years. She then completed a fellowship in Family Violence at the Chadwick Center for Children in San Diego. Dr. Murray is board certified in both general pediatrics and in child abuse pediatrics. She is the past medical director of the Riverside Child Assessment Team in Riverside County and Child Abuse Service Team in Orange County, and is currently the medical director of the Child Abuse and Protection Team at Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Long Beach. She is a professor of pediatrics at the University of California, Irvine where she is a child abuse pediatrician at UCI Medical Center, Child Abuse Services Team (CAST), and Children’s Hospital of Orange County. She is also a newborn nursery attending at UCI Medical Center. Dr. Wong completed her residency in pediatrics at UCLA where she was a chief resident. She served on the faculty at UCLA as part of the general pediatrics and child abuse teams. In 2002, Dr. Wong came to CHOC, where she was the assistant director of the pediatric residency program and on the child protection team at CHOC. In 2006, she became the Medical Director of the child protection team at CHOC. She is actively involved in the educating residents, other physicians, nursing staff, law enforcement and social services about child abuse issues. |
